ASA brings "Apps" to oscilloscopes and M1™
PDF

The M1 Apps Program is a combination of enabling technology and a business model/marketplace designed to bring third-party applications developers together with scope users to more rapidly deliver needed scope functionality to market.

Amherst, MA USA…. December 18, 2009

Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today launched another industry first – an apps marketplace for scopes. Called the M1 Apps Program™, it is designed to create a mechanism to both drastically speed up the introduction of new scope functionalities (e.g. compliance tests, special measurements, stimulus-response, etc.) and to create scope functionalities that otherwise would never be developed.

"Our ultimate objective is to accelerate the production of new technology solutions that speed customer measurement workflow of every kind, without regard to scope brand", according to Mike Williams, President and Chief Product Designer for M1OT. "The technology component of the Apps Program is M1's powerful native automation capabilities, with three new essential business elements that make up the program."

  • A new third-party Developers Program eliminates the technology barriers to having the true experts develop useful scope software of all kinds that runs on any brand of scope.
  • A new marketplace called the M1 Apps Store gives M1 users a genuine financial incentive to develop a wide variety of new functionality. It is also a one-stop destination for scope users to easily find new, low-cost or free functionalities like compliance tests and special measurements.
  • And a new Manufacturer's Apps Program makes it very simple for signal source manufacturers to rapidly create software options that combine their instruments with any scopes into stimulus-response systems. And do so without their having to re-develop and test any of the massive analysis functionality already in M1.

As of launch, the M1 Apps Store already has well over 100 Apps, including at least two “killer apps”:

  • SimBridge™ which allows the user to apply the massive analysis capabilities of M1 to their simulator output. M1 is the only scope software/analysis tool that can be used across the entire device life-cycle, from simulation through R&D, characterization, production test and beyond.
  • External Decode - M1 already provides a large number of decode capabilities, but there are a LOT of flavors of decode in the world. Our external decode App provides the framework, the hooks and a process for engineers and Developers to easily create new decode types in M1.

"Apps are all the rage now in other product spaces today," according to Williams, "but we've been in the customer-generated apps business since 2004 when we invented the idea of making scope software user-definable. What's different now is that we've created a marketplace to bring customer needs and developers together. The objective is more rapid and convenient access to new functionality across all scope brands."

ASA Corp. white-paper compares M1 native automation tools with
Agilent N5467A Infiniium User-Defined Application software

PDF

White-paper reveals differences of importance to teams that use more than a limited set of scope models from a single manufacturer, or that would benefit from access to a broader set of capabilities.

Amherst, MA USA…. November 10, 2009

Amherst Systems Associates Inc. (ASA Corp.) today released a white paper comparing key contributions of their M1 Oscilloscope Tools native automation capabilities with those of Agilent's N5467A User-Defined Application software for automating measurement workflow that includes oscilloscopes.

While both products can provide their users with useful automation functionality, M1's different approach to the product space yields a number of advantages over others that attempt to favor one brand of scope over another. The primary conclusions of the comparison reported in the document are:

  • M1 is not constrained to working with only a subset of one manufacturer’s equipment as UDA is and that this is a critically important difference.
  • M1 affords access to a significantly wider range of built-in analysis types.
  • M1 provides an intuitive graphical environment for authoring of automations, as well as a means for deriving automations from actual measurement sessions.
  • Acquisition and ownership costs of automating scope-based measurement workflow with M1 are significantly lower.

"M1's unencumbered and easily scalable automation capabilities have been available to our customers since the release of M1 v4 in early 2005." Mike Williams, President of ASA and Chief Product Designer of M1 OT, said. "That head start translates into a substantially more refined vision and capability set. I'm confident that any team with a need to automate scope-based measurement workflow will be dramatically better served by the rich, native capabilities of M1."

Engineers interested in obtaining this comparison document can do so from: www.m1ot.com/automation.

M1OT Promotion Replaces Dozens of Scope-Software Titles for $99
PDF

Amherst, MA USA…. June 5, 2009

Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today announced special promotional pricing for M1 Oscilloscope Tools - Standard Edition, intended to attract new customers and introduce them to their scope software. Under this promotion, a customer can purchase a permanent license to "M1 Standard" (normally $1995) for just $99. This will include one compliance test of the customer's choice. Additional tests can be purchased if needed.

The Standard Edition of M1 Oscilloscope Tools (M1OT-S) derives from ASA's flagship scope software M1 Oscilloscope Tools - Ultimate Edition (M1OT-U). Standard Edition is designed to provide an all-in-one-tool with functionality on par with the numerous proprietary tools available from the scope companies, at one to two orders of magnitude lower cost, and to support Tektronix, Agilent, LeCroy and Yokogawa oscilloscopes equally well. While a full complement of analysis packages with a single compliance test from ScopeCo can price out at well over $50,000, be spread across numerous software titles and user-interfaces, and provide little or no correlation across scope manufacturers, the M1 Standard promotion does provide broad functionality, a single UI and a single title that works on whatever real-time scopes the customer has.

According to Mike Williams, President and Principal Product Designer for the M1 family, "If you do the 'usual things' that high-end oscilloscope users do, M1 Standard is a single title that supports every level of oscilloscope from every major scope manufacturer, and it's yours for $100." M1 Standard includes:

  • Full A – T – L – Y oscilloscope support - including the scopes their own SW won’t support
  • Rich jitter/timing analysis
  • One zero-cost compliance test included - DDR2/3, PCIe 2.0, HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.
  • Eye diagrams
  • Serial data analysis
  • Twelve different Rj/Dj modes per MJSQ
  • Multiple analysis domains, intelligent axis synchronization
  • MSO channel support
  • I2C decode
  • Full touch-screen support
  • Extensive MATLAB connectivity
  • True differential thresholding

"Included with this promotion is a discounted upgrade path to M1OT Ultimate," Williams further noted, "a tool brimming with innovative capabilities that provides tremendous enterprise level impact, such as team effectiveness, collaboration, measurement workflow speedup, and a great deal more."

The $99 M1-Standard promotion is scheduled to run June through August, 2009. Restrictions and other program rules apply, and are stated on the web sites listed below.

Compliance-Failure Diagnosis Tools Available for M1OT Users
PDF

Amherst, MA USA…. June 4, 2009

Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today announced the release their latest version (6.03) of M1 Oscilloscope Tools. A key feature set of v6.03 is Compliance Breakout which makes it possible to display, explore and compare any of the unique, test-specific measurements (e.g. Data-out high impedance time from CK/CK# [tHZ(DQ)] in DDR3) for any of the compliance tests supported by M1.

Modern compliance tests (DDR2/3, PCIe, etc.) typically specify somewhere between 10 and 30 measurements to be tested against limits set by the issuing standards bodies for a device to be said to comply. Most of these measurements are familiar, such as period or rise time. But in recent years, unique measurements have started to appear in standards, such as tHZ(DQ) in DDR3. Compliance Breakout provides the user with diagnostic tools that allow them to get to the bottom of why their device is failing these test-specific measurements. Ordinarily, these unique, test-specific measurements only exist within the compliance tests themselves and are not available as independently invokable measurements. Compliance Breakout allows the user to invoke/view that unique measurement directly in any of the normal M1 views (vs time, histogram, long-time-scale/multi-acquisition). By being integrated into the normal measurement payload of M1, these test-specific measurements can be combined with M1’s other unique diagnostic tools like Isolated Sub-Population Analysis, which isolates all the failures to allow them to be compared/synchronized with signals on other channels and in other analysis domains. Compliance Breakout works with any of the compliance-specific measurements in any compliance test supported by M1.

Mike Williams, President and Principal Product Designer for the M1 product family, noted "Compliance Breakout dovetails perfectly into our vision of M1 as a single inexpensive tool capable of accelerating every stage of our customer's measurement workflow... both on-line and off-line, regardless of what brand of scopes they use. Because of the open implementation standard approach we take in creating compliance tests, Compliance Breakout automatically makes available every test-specific measurement in every compliance test we offer now and in the future a part of the standard measurement payload of M1."

To learn more about Compliance Breakout, please visit www.m1ot.com/breakout.

A white-paper illustrating how to use Compliance Breakout is available from: http://www.m1ot.com/application-notes.htm.

ASA Corp. Launches Finder’s Fee Program
PDF

ASA today announced the M1 Recommender Program, which pays up to a 10% finder’s fee to individuals who successfully refer organizations that adopt M1 Oscilloscope Tools, or sign on for ASA's CIRRUS Program

Amherst, MA USA…. November 6, 2008

In the current economic downturn, thousands of engineers have already been laid off and it seems likely that thousands more will be in the coming months. Today, Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) announced the launch of the M1 Recommender Program (MRP), the third element of ASA’s “Economic Stimulus Package” for the declining electronics industry. MRP joins the previously announced ScopeMatch and CIRRUS programs which provide customers with 5 and 6-digit savings on oscilloscope purchases, and a zero-cost license for ASA's M1 Oscilloscope Tools to purchasers of new oscilloscopes, respectively.

Under MRP, ASA will pay a finder’s fee of at least 7% for referrals that lead to a sale of M1 Oscilloscope Tools, and a flat $500 finder's fee to referrals that lead to a CIRRUS adoption and upgrade. Participants can refer multiple names. A typical M1 multi-unit order can result in a finder's fee that exceeds $1700. ASA President Mike Williams noted "Paying people to sell your product is exactly how all products get sold. ASA has a choice about how we approach that. It's the customer who has made M1 successful and I believe it is the perfect time to share some of the value with them. We all know people who have been either laid off or had their pay cut. I think this is the direction we need to move in."

Any individual who knows a person or organization that is either in the process of purchasing a new oscilloscope or could benefit from the industry-leading functionality and massive organizational benefits available from M1 OT can submit that name on ASA’s website. If the referral is previously unknown to ASA, and moves forward with a qualifying M1 purchase within the next 90 days, the referrer will earn a finder’s fee. Multiple names can be referred by a single individual, with no limit to the magnitude of the fee that could possibly be earned. The program is currently limited to the United States for both the recommender and the referral.

U.S. Availability

The M1 Recommender Program starts immediately; details at: www.m1ot.com/m1-recommender-program-2.htm
