ASA Corp. Announces ScopeMatch™, a Scope Procurement Advisory Service
PDF
ASA today announced a new consulting service, dubbed “ScopeMatch,” that will assist engineers in matching their needs to the correct oscilloscope to avoid over- or under-buying.
Amherst, MA USA…. August 27, 2008
The ScopeMatch service will help solve two common problems engineers face when confronted with a
need to purchase an oscilloscope. The first problem is matching the wrong scope to the
work being done. This can happen for a variety of reasons.
The second problem is purchasing the scope carelessly. Many engineers go straight to the
manufacturer without checking other sources. Better deals can be found in the secondary,
refurb, and rental markets.
ASA’s ScopeMatch service offers five specific value propositions:
- We'll help you match the signals you need to see now and into the future, with the right scope.
Not too much. Not too little. And zero vested interest in whether you buy a lot or a little.
- We'll have a rational discussion about probing.
- We'll have a rational discussion about software. Potential savings: $124k max, $25k-$50k typical.
- We'll have a rational discussion about renting vs buying for your particular situation... and...
- We'll talk with our partners in the ALL of the scope markets to see about getting you the best possible price.
How much can ScopeMatch impact a purchase? An example on ASA’s website illustrates a potential savings of over
$200k on a high-end scope. While this may seem like a stretch, the most powerful real-time scope on the market
costs about $160k. Probes, probe accessories, and software can approach $200k. Yet, it is entirely possible
that many groups buy at this extreme level of capability without adequate consideration. An upcoming white
paper from ASA analyzes how much scope you need for a given level of technology. When analyzed from a technical
point of view, there is very little new work that can be addressed by the highest end scopes that is not
equally well addressed by lesser instruments.
The way ScopeMatch might influence a purchase will start by looking at the engineers current
and future needs from a credible, technical point of view. This first step might illustrate
that a lower power, less expensive instrument might serve their needs equally well. The
same conversation might also reveal a need for less probing than they might have otherwise
planned. And by tying ScopeMatch to ASA’s Cirrus Program (think absolutely free software
that does vastly more than what you can get from the manufacturer), significant software
savings can also be revealed. Once it is determeined what they really need, ASA will take
everything that was learned about their work and their preferences and contact our partners at:
- The scope companies
- The secondary and refurb markets
- The rental markets if appropriate
U.S. Availability and Pricing
The ScopeMatch service is currently available at a $495.00 price point for scopes
purchases below 6GHz, and $995.00 for scope purchases greater than or equal to 6GHz.
Customers can inquire about the service on the ASA website or by calling ASA directly.

ASA Corp. Announces Version 6 of M1 OT with Isolated Sub-Population Analysis
ASA today announced Version 6 of their award-winning M1
Oscilloscope Tools software family. The centerpiece of V6 is a
unique way of analyzing anomalous behavior in a waveform. Dubbed
“Isolated Sub-Population Analysis” or ISPA, this new capability
allows oscilloscope users to better understand and debug important
signal behaviors.
Amherst, MA USA…. July 22, 2008
Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) is proud to announce the release
of Version 6 of their M1 Oscilloscope Tools software family. The centerpiece
of this new release is a unique patent-pending technology called “Isolated
Sub-Population Analysis,” or ISPA.
ISPA enables the user to better understand two significant classes of signal
behaviors... those which repeat, and those which can be associated with events
or behaviors on other signals. ISPA provides the critical "back end" of the
process to take anomalies discovered by M1’s award-winning Hidden Anomaly Location
(HAL) technology, as well as other event-isolating capabilities of M1 OT, and
determine what their root causes are. ISPA creates an analysis population that
is comprised only of the events of interest.... none of the ‘normal’ events
that comprise the majority of the waveform are present in the isolated sub-population
(ISP). The ISP can then be explored and analyzed separately using M1's
industry-leading collection of existing debug tools.
“Imagine a forest comprised primarily of oak, pine & maple trees,” Mike Williams,
President of ASA and Chief Designer of M1 OT, said. “Assume that scattered about that
forest are several small groups of birch trees that you want to study... you want to
know things like how many birches are in there, how far apart they are, what size clusters
they form, etc. This is literally a case of the forest preventing you from seeing the trees.
if you had a tool that allowed you to see through the part of the forest you don't care about
and only see, measure, analyze, etc the birches, the job would be a lot easier and therefore
faster. Philosophically, Version 6 of M1 OT is a collection of tools that let you see,
explore and analyze just the birches."
The initial ISPA capabilities included in v6.00 will be followed later this summer
by significant additional capabilities. These will include both new ways to specify
a subpopulation for analysis and new ways to view those subpopulations in context.
In addition, HAL development will continue in parallel, providing new anomaly types
that M1 OT will be able to automatically detect and extract for further analysis using ISPA.
U.S. Availability and Pricing
Version 6.00 of M1 OT will be available in late July 2008. Existing M1 users with an
active Software Subscription are eligible to install this upgrade at no additional charge.
M1 OT employs “scalable pricing,” where the actual price level is determined by the scope
to which you will attach it. Pricing ranges from $995US to $7995US in five steps. For
more information, please see the product web site.

ASA Corp. Adds Powerful, Unique New Waveform
Decode Functionality to M1 OT
ASA today announced the release of unique new serial decode tools for
their M1 Oscilloscope Tools software family that enables faster and easier
decode and debug on Tektronix, Agilent, LeCroy or Yokogawa
oscilloscopes.
Amherst, MA USA…. July 1, 2008
Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today announced the release of
M1-OT v5.02, which includes powerful new waveform decode functionality and
multi-margin capability for Eye Masks, among other changes. This is a free
upgrade for any M1 user with an active Software Subscription.
When you're trying to get to the bottom of a problem in your encoded
waveform, being able to see when things happen... what values are present or not
present... how often certain values or groups of values come up, can provide
important insights into rapidly drilling down to the source of the problem.
M1-OT v5.02 has several unique new views to do this, which include viewing
your encoded waveform fields (address, data, control when appropriate) versus
time (i.e. see when that value/values occur) as well as viewing how the range of
values distribute in a histogram.
Another useful new exploratory mode occurs when searching
for values of a field (e.g. frame starts, data values, addresses, R/W, etc.).
Decode Search in M1 allows you to search on individual or multiple values, for
example, multiple address values for I2C or multiple PID valus in a LIN
waveform... you can move from one specific event to another and M1 will keep the
decode-timing view synched with the M1 ScopeView as well as any other vs-time
views. This will allow you to rapidly associate potentially pathological
waveform features by their proximity to the event. These unique insights can be
the difference in rapidly finding the root cause of a problem vs lingering on it
for days.
M1’s new Decode functionality provides customers a common Decode and
Debug process independent from specific manufacturer oscilloscope software from
Tektronix, Agilent, and LeCroy. ASA’s M1 Oscilloscope Tools can deliver a more
cost-effective option to all scope users, as well as the only product in the
marketplace that can provide correlated results because engineers can now use an
analysis engine that is identical no matter whose scope they are using. Further
organizational efficiencies are contributed by other commonalities such as a
common data format, a common interface, and a common automation standard.
U.S. Availability and Pricing
M1-OT v5.02 will be available on July 7, 2008. M1-OT employs
"scalable pricing", where the actual price level is determined by the scope with
which you will use it. Pricing ranges from $995US to $7995US in five steps. For

ASA Corp. Adds No-Cost Fully Buffered DIMM Compliance Test For M1-OT
ASA today announced the publication of a no-cost test script for their M1 Oscilloscope Tools software
family that enables FB-DIMM compliance testing on Tektronix, Agilent, LeCroy or Yokogawa oscilloscopes.
Amherst, MA USA…. June 12, 2008
Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today announced the release of a TestScript for
the Fully Buffered DIMM specification (JEDEC Standard 8-18) for their M1-OT product family. The
TestScript is available to any M1-OT customers for immediate download from the ASA web site at
www.M1OT.com/testscripts.htm
The FB-DIMM TestScript will test for compliance of the regular and “clean” reference
clocks per the specification, as well as the PLL. It will also test the receiver input
and the transmitter output for compliance to the JEDEC 8-18 standard. These tests are
backed by M1 OT’s powerful analysis engine, including SEEj RjDj decomposition. Coupled
with efficient and easy reporting, this provides a strong automated solution for your FB-DIMM testing needs.
ASA President Mike Williams noted “When I checked in with my sales team on Monday morning, they
noted that a customer had inquired whether we had a TestScript for FB-DIMM or not. We didn’t,
so I grabbed one of my engineers and told him to fix that. Thanks to M1’s rapid automation capability,
he was able to put that together with just a few hours of effort.”
Williams added, "While clicking an FB-DIMM script together isn't really the level of inventive
contribution we brag about after work.. the rapid automation capability we've built into M1 is.
Our automation approach.. ScriptBuilder... allows any customer to do this kind of thing quickly
themselves inside of M1. They can have the test or the automation the same day they decide they
want it. It eliminates the bottleneck created by relying on the scope companies to do this. I'm
guessing there are already M1 customers out there that have created their own FB-DIMM script in
M1, since it's pretty much read-and-click from the spec. The automation abilities in M1 provide
an open solutions architecture for compliance test users and authors that puts the power to rapidly
prototype and share any series of measurements they might need to make. And if M1 doesn't have
one of the measurements already onboard... very, very unlikely by the way... you just create
that in M1's MeasurementBuilder and you're off to the races."
M1’s FB-DIMM TestScript now provides customers a common testing process independent from specific
manufacturer oscilloscope tests from Tektronix, Agilent, and LeCroy. ASA’s M1 Oscilloscope Tools
can deliver a more cost-effective option to all scope users, as well as the only product in the
marketplace that can provide correlated results because engineers can now use an analysis engine

No-Cost DisplayPort Compliance Test Available For M1-OT Customers
ASA today announced the publication of a no-cost test script for their M1 Oscilloscope Tools
software family that enables DisplayPort compliance testing on Tektronix, Agilent, LeCroy or
Yokogawa oscilloscopes.
Amherst, MA USA…. March 20, 2008
Amherst Systems Associates Inc (ASA Corp.) today announced the release of a test script for the DisplayPort compliance
spec for their M1-OT product family. The TestScript is available to any M1-OT customers for immediate download from
the ASA-maintained web site www.ScopeApplications.com. ASA’s test script joins Agilent Technologies’ offering, which
was released in late 2007.
The most important aspect of M1's DisplayPort TestScript is that now customers that use non-Agilent oscilloscopes like
Tektronix, LeCroy and Yokogawa scopes, as well as customers that use Agilent scopes that Agilent's DisplayPort test
doesn't support, can all begin DisplayPort testing today, and that Agilent-scope users now have a more cost-effective
option as well. A second critical benefit delivered by the M1 product is correlation because engineers can now use an
analysis engine that is identical no matter whose scope they are using. Manufacturer-to-manufacturer variation that you
see among the products from the scope companies is eliminated by the use of M1's common "analysis engine". Further
organizational efficiencies are contributed by still other commonalities such as a common data format, a common
interface, and a common automation standard.
While comparing M1's solution with Agilent's, ASA President Mike Williams noted "Agilent’s DisplayPort software costs
almost $6000, and DisplayPort testing is all it can do. If you add up the costs of everything you need to get into M1, it
varies from $1k to $8k in round numbers depending on your scope – and M1 does a lot more than just one test.
Interestingly, since this applies to the version of M1 we make for Agilent (E2690B, Agilent M1 Oscilloscope Tools), it
means that Agilent now has two DisplayPort compliance test solutions they can offer their customers at two very different
price points. I think it would be a valuable exercise for the customer to look carefully at all of the other things they get with
M1 for a lot less money."
Actually, if a customer is purchasing a new oscilloscope, they may be eligible to receive a no-cost M1-OT license through
ASA’s Cirrus Program, which means that for some customers, the total cost to begin DisplayPort testing would be zero.
For more information about M1 Cirrus, go to
www.amherst-systems.com/m1-cirrus-program.htm.
With regard to M1OT's automation capabilities, Williams noted, "On December 5, one of our engineers discovered that
Agilent had published a DDR3 compliance test in late August. After a couple of emails went around asking if we already
had it or not.. and we didn't.. my Chief Engineer Tom Zych clicked it together in M1's ScriptBuilder the next morning in
about an hour before he began his actual work day."
Williams went on to state, "While clicking a DisplayPort script together isn't really the level of inventive contribution we
brag about after work.. the rapid automation capability we've built into M1 is. Our automation approach.. ScriptBuilder...
allows any customer to do this kind of thing quickly themselves inside of M1. They can have the test or the automation the
same hour they decide they want it. It eliminates the bottleneck created by relying on the scope companies to do this. I'm
guessing there are already M1 customers out there that have created their own DisplayPort script in M1, since it's pretty
much read-and-click from the spec. The automation abilities in M1 provide an open solutions architecture for compliance

make. And if M1 doesn't have one of the measurements already onboard... very, very unlikely by the way... you just create
that in M1's MeasurementBuilder and you're off to the races." For additional information on M1’s open solutions
architecture, please visit
